Our Case Studies

Welcome to the Case Study section, where I provide unique insights and showcase the culmination of my career learnings in managing community and environmental issues and Indigenous Affairs mostly within the mining industry.

From stakeholder engagement and managing impacts to navigating legal and regulatory approvals, these case studies highlight the importance of respectful engagement and collaborative problem-solving in diverse cultural contexts.

Each project has provided valuable lessons in integrating cultural heritage management with sustainable practices, offering insights for industry professionals and stakeholders seeking culturally respectful approaches.

Since leaving Rio Tinto, I have reconnected with my creative side, stepped out of my comfort zone, and challenged myself to pursue interests I've always wanted to explore, such as voiceover artistry and training. I attended the Voice Over Fundamentals training in Sydney at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), where I met some outstanding people, learned from the best in the industry, and came to understand my voice a little better. I've often been told that I have a good face for radio.

From May 2012 to August 2013, I served as Vice President of Sustainability at Geita Gold Mine (GGM), operated by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) in Tanzania. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, I was accountable for Health, Safety, Environment, Community, Security, and Communications across Tanzania and East Africa. The role followed a 9-weeks on, 3-weeks off, Fly-In, Fly-out (FIFO) roster.

In November 2009, I facilitated a sacred forest ceremony in Lengori, Gabon, for BHP’s manganese exploration project. Collaborating with Hervé Omboye, Wayne Williams, government officials, local leaders, and the community, we faced several challenges.

I stepped into the role of Senior Advisor - Indigenous Affairs at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) in 2000, following the landmark Mabo High Court ruling in 1992 and the subsequent introduction of the Native Title Act in 1993. The relationship between mining companies and Indigenous communities before then had been marked by conflict and exclusion. I was the first person to hold this position in the company’s history, responsible for navigating this challenging landscape.

As the Community and Environment Specialist for BHP Billiton's Minerals Exploration in Africa, I navigated far-flung corners of Central, East, and West Africa, securing stakeholder and environmental approvals. I developed and implemented a comprehensive strategy for land access, stakeholder engagement, legal compliance and regulatory approvals and led Human Rights Impact Assessments. I engaged with chiefs, traditional leaders, and local communities to cultivate positive relationships, ensuring compliance and successful approvals for BHP's exploration programs across Zambia, Gabon, Ethiopia, and Angola.
