Since leaving Rio Tinto, I have reconnected with my creative side, stepped out of my comfort zone, and challenged myself to pursue interests I’ve always wanted to explore, such as voiceover artistry and training. I attended the Voice Over Fundamentals training in Sydney at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), where I met some outstanding people, learned from the best in the industry, and came to understand my voice a little better. I’ve often been told that I have a good face for radio.
During my university years, I answered telephones after hours for a business, having responded to an ad in the local paper seeking people with a pleasant telephone manner (back when landlines were a thing). This experience planted the seed for my interest in voiceover work. So, I’ve decided to extend voiceover to my repertoire of skills.

In April, I completed my first audiobook narration, contributing to segments of the Growing Up Torres Strait Islander in Australia audiobook.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience – you can find more details (including a sample) below.
While voiceover work is something different to the work I’ve done before, it’s important to have fun, use our skills and talents for enjoyment, and make the most of the gifts we are given. I am absolutely loving this new endeavour. I also think it’s essential to engage in projects outside our ordinary routines—disruptive projects that might send us on a different path and trajectory. Podcasts, commercials, audiobooks, cartoons, airport notices, call centre hold announcements – the sky is the limit.
